What's on your Roof?

Are there dark streaks on your roof? You're not alone. Many believe that this discoloration and staining is caused by pollutants, dust, pollen or sap from trees. That is not the case! The algae grows on your roof shingles, staining and discoloring them.

Roof moss, roof fungus, or roof mold are other terms for this staining. Long Island has an ideal climate for the growth of these algae, as it has a humid, warm climate. Gleocapsa Magma is an algae that is actually a strain of bacteria that grows on areas of the roof that are shaded, sheltered or receive less sunlight, such as the north and west sides of your home.
